Get outdoors this May half-term
Woohoo, half-term is almost upon us, time to get planning and lining up a week to remember. Here’s what’s happening across Cornwall with an outdoor, feel-fantastic twist.
Heligan Wild Week, Lost Gardens of Heligan
26th May – 3rd June
With the promo promising ‘grubby knees guaranteed’ we know this is going to be our kind of event. Throughout the week there will be an energetic mix of outdoor play activities to encourage kids to let loose and free their wild side. Things kick off in the Wild Tribe Yurt where animal wannabe’s can pick whether to be an owl, frog, butterfly or fox, then with face paint on and self-made headdress in place, it’s over to the giant outdoor assault course and a test of hunter-gather skills. There’s also musical workshops and a chill out zone complete with camp-fire and hammocks, and of course, all this is on top of all the usual amazingness that awaits in Heligan’s 200-acre estate. What’s not to love?
Rockpool Explorer, St Michael’s Mount
27th May and 3rd June
Who’s up for a trip to St Michael’s Mount in West Cornwall? Yes, us too. We’d recommend visiting this iconic island that rises majestically from the bay any day of the year but head there on 27th May or 3rd June and you can combine your visit with a free Rockpool Ramble courtesy of the National Trust. With an expert from Great Scott! Outdoor Adventures as your guide you’ll have a rummage in the rockpools and meet the weird and wonderful creatures that live just off the causeway. Suitable for all ages. No need to book.
28th May
Discover the edible treats hidden in hedgerows and lying on beaches by bagsing a place on the Cornish Wild Food foraging walk taking place on Pendower Beach on the beautiful Roseland Peninsula (adults £25, teenagers £10, children free). Part of the Fal River Festival, the three-hour experience will get you confident harvesting tasty wild edibles and will finish up with an all important taste test and cookery session. Naturally delish!
The Highway Rat Activity Trail, Cardinham Woods
Fire up little one’s imaginations and get their legs moving by setting them off on The Highway Rat Activity Trail at Cardinham Woods near Bodmin. The latest Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler book to be brought to life on Cardinham’s forest trails, The Highway Rat tells the tale of a ravenous rat who craves buns, biscuits and all sweet things. Follow the panels, complete activities and interact with the forest as you head on a journey with The Highway Rat and all the characters from the story. Trail activity packs are available to purchase from the café for £3.
Invisible World’s, Eden Project
26th May – 3rd June
The Eden Project is all about celebrating and maximising the great outdoors and their May half term activities to launch the major new exhibition, Invisible World’s, are no exception. Discover amazing interactive exhibits, extraordinary artworks, hands-on experiments and exciting events which bring the invisible into view, uncovering the interconnectedness of life and the Earth’s environments at every scale. There will also be hands-on science shows, crafts and extra special performances.
Join a beach clean
Roll up your sleeves and spend a few hours helping to keep Cornwall’s beaches clean and beautiful. You’ll find organised beach cleans up and down the county and its worth checking out the National Trust website and others such as Clean Cornwall and Surfers Against Sewage for dates and details. Getting children involved in beach cleans when they are young is a great way to teach them the importance of picking up rubbish and nothing quite beats that “I’ve done good” feeling.
Our closest beach getting the half term spring clean treatment is Hemmick beach on 2nd June.
